Zombie nation! The Walking dead cast take over Comic-Con as Andrew Lincoln and co spill their guts on season six

It doesn't matter if it's Alexandria or San Diego - Rick and his gang are taking over.

Comic Con belonged to The Walking Dead on Friday as the ensemble cast took to the stage to take questions on the upcoming season six.

Luckily the crew were used to being just out of arms reach of rabid crowds, as hungry fans and press alike swarmed to get a taste of what's to come.

Sadly, the most important man to the entire Walking Dead universe - creator Robert Kirkman - could not be there for the first time in more than a decade, as he was at home recuperating from throat surgery.

But he was there in spirit... and on everybody's T-shirts, as the whole cast showed their solidarity bearing his bearded face on the front.

Despite being a series full of blood, gore and grotesque violence, the announcement that got the biggest crowd reaction in packed Hall H was a romantic one.

'My mom is desperate for Rick and Michonne to get together,' Andrew Lincoln revealed, while Danai Gurira sheepishly grinned beside him.

The katana-wielding badass herself predicts a more platonic - but even more unlikely - partnership, with Melissa McBride's Carol, as the two have very different opinions on how to deal with their new found safe haven of Alexandria.

Melissa meanwhile, who plays the 'mom' of the group - child executions aside - brought a very Carol-esque prop to the panel and something just as well received as season six news: cookies.

Although she has probably murdered more living people than anyone else in the group with the exception of Rick, she insisted Carol isn't a cold blooded killer.

'Everything is fueled by the loss of people; that's why she's doing what she's doing,' she said. 'She can't stand around and watch people die. She's ready to pay the price or go to hell to try to help... and do whatever she can to help people.'

Michael Cudlitz, who plays Abraham, joked that he would love to see his character hanging out with Carol and eating her cookies all day.

But that looks unlikely; Abraham has been relatively quiet to date, and Cudlitz hinted that his 'defining moment is yet to come'.

Another character who is set to come into the fore this season is Morgan. He was in the very first episode then disappeared, cropped back up in season three and disappeared again, only to finally catch up with Rick in the season five finale just in time to see him execute a guy with a bullet to the head.

The exciting season six trailer revealed that Morgan now has a starring role, and one that may be in opposition to Officer Grimes. According to Lennie James who plays him, fans may also find out what he's been up to all this time.

'We may find out what Morgan's been doing with himself, where he's been,' he said.

And as for everyone's favourite character Daryl Dixon, actor Norman Reedus revealed that the normally reclusive lone wolf has finally found a home in Alexandia, where he has a purpose and a job, but added that his place within the community would be tested this season.

He also revealed how he gets into character: 'A lot of Motorhead, a lot of coffee. I play Candy Crush a lot.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 11.
