Elliott times it to perfection to stun Newcastle

A late goal from Stuart Elliott stunned Newcastle as the Premier League side slipped to a surprising 1-0 defeat at Championship new boys Doncaster Rovers.

Striker Elliott capitalised on hesitancy from Jose Enrique before curling a shot beyond goalkeeper Tim Krul in the 87th minute.

Kevin Keegan's side could have suffered a more convincing defeat had it not been for Steve Harper.

Shola Ameobi went closest to scoring for Newcastle

The keeper, who was replaced by Krul for the second half, made a superb save to deny Gareth Taylor after 36 minutes.

Krul also had to be at his best to divert a stinging John Spicer drive around the post.

The closest Newcastle came to scoring was a shot from Shola Ameobi that struck the post, while the striker also saw his shot saved by Neil Sullivan in the 75th minute.

Toon boss Keegan included French trialist Sebastien Bassong in his starting XI,
while Geremi captained the side after returning from his extended summer break.
