Emma Pooley crosses the line to finish 8th in the Elite Women's Time Trial at the Road World Championships in Italy

Olympic cycling silver medallist Emma Pooley could finish only eighth in Wednesday's time trial at the Road World Championships in Varese, Italy, with a time of 34min 48.87sec.

U.S. star Amber Neben won the title in 33min 51.35sec, with Austrian Christiane Soeder 7.56 secs behind in second, and German Judith Arndt third.

Britain's Sharon Laws finished 19th on the 25.15km course.

Pooley will hope to improve after her memorable performance in Beijing last month, when she won a silver medal in the women's time-trial at the Olympic Games.

"I wasn’t the favourite, but deep in my heart I knew if I had a perfect ride I had a chance - I was focussed and very motivated," said Neben.

"It's an incredible season. I was disappointed not to ride in Beijing so today I had a little extra motivation to get it done."
