The final episode saw them drink a tiny bottle of champagne with Joanna Lumley in a special outdoor version of the programme.

Chris was also introduced to the world's best Mexican wrestling stars, who challenged the presenter to learn all their names or face a minute with them in the ring.

Although he successfully managed to remember 11 out of 12 names, the athletes kept to their word and forced him to learn some basic moves.

As the programme drew to a close, Alex got Chris to meet former Friday night guests including a paper aeroplane enthusiast, three military wives and a pair of young ice skaters.

But it all got too much for the brunette presenter and, as Alex turned to say thank you, Chris could be heard remarking: 'Oh no, she's getting emotional.'

Alex quickly explained: 'You've been lovely, you've been lovely,' to which Chris replied: 'Loveliness brings out loveliness.'

The programme ended with singers from Carole King the Musical singing 'You've Got A Friend' as Chris could be seen pedalling an orange trike into the background.

The Radio 2 host was named as a hot favourite for the Top Gear role almost immediately after Jeremy Clarkson revealed he would not be going back following a fracas with a producer.

But Chris insisted on March 11 he would never take on the role.

Less than a month later he announced his new role on Twitter, writing: 'First tweet as new Top Gear host. I would like to say Jeremy, Richard and James are the greatest. And NO I'm not leaving the R2 Breakfast Show.'

Kim Shillinglaw, controller of BBC Two and BBC Four, said at the time: ‘I am so delighted that Chris will be presenting the next series of Top Gear.

‘His knowledge of and passion for cars are well-known and combined with his sheer inventiveness and cheeky unpredictability he is the perfect choice to take our much-loved show into the future.

'Chris is a huge fan of Top Gear and has great respect for the craft and work ethic of one of the best production teams in the world.

‘He knows the phenomenal attention to detail it takes to make a single sequence of Top Gear, let alone a whole series. He is already full of brilliant ideas and I can't wait for him to get started.’

The move sees Chris set to become one of the highest earners at the BBC, with a contract said to be worth £5million over three years.
