'Can't get enough of that wonderful Duff': Homer Simpson's favorite beer hits shelves

  • 21st Century Fox has plans to roll out Duff Beer in Chile and other parts of South America and Europe by early next year
  • The official Fox-licensed beer will be a premium lager that has 'got a caramel aromatic to it'
  • Media giant did not confirm if there was a U.S. release but said it is not ruling it out
  • The iconic brew became synonymous with The Simpsons as Homer was often shown knocking back the beer

The fictional Duff Beer made famous by television's favorite cartoon dad Homer Simpson will hit shelves in Chile after the show's owner announced plans to turn it into a real brand.

While beer sellers have produced unofficial Duff Beers in the market in places including Chile, Germany and Australia, 21st Century Fox's official branded premium lager will be rolled out 'to more of South America and Europe by early next year', the Wall Street Journal reported.

The iconic brew became synonymous with The Simpsons as Homer was often shown knocking back the beer in his favorite bar, Moe's Tavern.

Duff even comes with the advertising slogan 'Can't get enough of that wonderful Duff' in the hit TV series.

As for why the media giant is launching first in Chile, it is reportedly because Fox has been involved in intellectual property lawsuits with brewers over the years, many in Chile, who infringed on the brand, and now they are trying to compete with them, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Chile has one of the fastest growing markets for unofficial Duff beers where a large number of contraband bottles were seized by Chilean police after Fox filed an intellectual property complaint.

'Once you see enough piracy, you are faced with two choices,' Jeffrey Godsick, president of the media company’s consumer products division said.

'One is deciding to fight it, and the other is deciding to go out [into the market] with it.'

The official Fox-licensed Duff Beer is described as having a hint of fruit and the lager has also 'got a caramel aromatic to it' - which might come as a shock to Simpsons fans as the beer in the show is a cheap, lowbrow beer.

Godsick said the product is inspired by the brew in the long-running show but that the one they sell in stores will not have characters involved in the marketing.

With the initial launch in Chile, which has been a year in the making, the company has not confirmed if it will enter the domestic market but said it is not ruling the U.S. out.

Currently, Duff Beer is only available domestically in Universal's theme parks in Los Angeles and Orlando.

Godsick said there is potential to have Duff everywhere in the world which gives a hint of a hope for a U.S. release.

The Simpsons is the longest-running scripted series in TV history, on air for 26 years, and Fox executives claim that an episode is airing 'somewhere in the world, at all times, day or night, 365 days a year'.
