Lionel Messi is the obvious choice as the cover star for FIFA 16, but the video game's creators EA Sports are giving fans the opportunity to have their say on who stands shoulder to shoulder with the magical Argentine.

The latest FIFA game will arrive in stores around the country on September 25, and in preparation for that eagerly anticipated launch date, video game enthusiasts can vote for their cover star to join the Barcelona forward.

Messi will once again be the face of the next installment in the FIFA series, but for the first time since it was originally introduced in 1993, gamers across Australia, France, Latin America, Mexico, and the United Kingdom can help decide who joins him on the front cover.

HOW THE VOTING WORKS

Each vote you cast is worth one point, and you can vote like this once a day until the voting closes on July 5.

Every time you vote, you can share your support on Twitter. When you do this, you give your favorite player an extra 10 points.

You can also gain more points by playing FIFA 15. When you vote for your player through the portal, you will be given the option to link your unique login (Origin ID). Once linked, actions you perform in FIFA 15 will go towards your player.

Points from in-game play are rewarded regardless of the clubs, players or modes you choose. You must have your Origin ID linked in order to earn points this way.

The five participating regions each have a select number of eligible players that can feature alongside Messi, which will be revealed on June 16.

Fans in each region will have until July 5 to cast their vote, with the chosen cover stars set to be announced on July 8.

Harry Kane was the first to drum up support for his campaign to be the face of the new game on Instagram, swiftly followed by Jordan Henderson.

Both can be seen kitted out in EA Sports emblazoned black nike jumpers, using hashtags in an attempt to generate support.

Manchester City were next to champion the cause of their prolific striker Sergio Aguero via their official Instagram page, telling their followers: 'It's all about #VOTEAGUERO!'

Meanwhile, Pele has been promoting the next installment of the popular football video game via the official E3 gameplay trailer.

In the mini film, the Brazilian legend speaks of 'the game played by the entire planet...the game that brings us together, made up of many faces,' with extraordinarily accurate stadium graphics accompanying his words.

The game, which can now be pre-ordered on PS4, Xbox One and PC, will be the first version to feature women's football, including the England women's international team.
