  • Was onstage alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short in San Antonio
  • Said retiring before the opportunity to mock Trump campaign was 'the biggest mistake of my life'
  • Proceeded to mock Trump's hair, egotism and anti-Mexican comments

Retired talk show host David Letterman emerged from retirement briefly to have his say on a comedy event too good to miss - Donald Trump's presidential campaign.

Letterman, who retired from CBS's Late Show in May after 33 years, resurfaced Friday night, and fired off a series of put-downs in his famed Top Ten format.

Coming unexpectedly on stage at a comedy show hosted by Steve Martin and Martin Short in San Antonio, Texas, Letterman mocked everything from Trump's rhetoric to his hair.

Explaining his return to the world of showbiz, Letterman told the crowd: 'I retired and I have no regrets, none. I was happy. I'll make actual friends.

'I was complacent I was satisfied I was content... And then a couple of days ago Donald Trump said he was running for president.

'I have made the biggest mistake of my life.' The encounter was recorded by audience member Jeanie Engler, who posted footage to YouTube.

He later revealed the fateful Top Ten, which mocked Trump's hairdo as a 'wind advisory', a gopher and a free-range animal. He also burned Trump for wearing excessive cologne.

He also took the change to weigh on on his anti-Mexican rhetoric, which became even more extreme this weekend with a proposal to unilaterally fine the Mexican people millions of dollars to punish them for illegal immigration.

Referring to the thousands of Mexicans who've spoke out against him, Letterman joked: 'Donald Trump has pissed off so many Mexicans he's starring in a movie title No Amigos', a reference to the Three Amigos film from 1986.

Letterman has personal experience on Trump, who has appeared on his show several times, even as far back as 1986.
