Tennis bad-boy Nick Kyrgios has hit back at Pat Rafter, after the former Australian Davis Cup captain said the sport should be focusing on young players 'we can be proud of'
The latest comment from Kyrgios comes after Rafter, the current Tennis Australia Director of Performance, responded to recent criticism from Kyrgios' friend and fellow controversial figure Bernard Tomic.
Tomic said he had been 'neglected' by senior Australian officials within the sport.
Rafter said Tennis Australia had discontinued its support of the troubled star 'until there is some reconciliation' between the parties, and said he hopes the game can eliminate some of the complacency he believes has been displayed by young players such as Tomic, according to the Sunday Mail.
'My big philosophy is trying to take away that sense of entitlement and make young players hungry,' Rafter said.
Kyrgios' swipe at Rafter was quickly deleted from the young star's Twitter account
Tomic said Rafter, who is now Tennis Australia's director of player performance, was merely a 'mask' for Tiley and that he had no idea how to control the budget for player funding
'It's a principle I believe in and feel really passionate about. The philosophy has always been in place within Tennis Australia, but when I came in there, I made it quite clear and quite strong.'
Tomic was recently axed from Australia's upcoming Davis Cup quarter-final against Kazakhstan on July 17, following his post-match tirade at Wimbleon.
'All of a sudden they are neglecting me for some reason,' Tomic said, after he was eliminated from the tournament by world number one Novak Djokovic.
'They are not supporting me, not respecting me.
'All of a sudden they are neglecting me for some reason. They are not supporting me, not respecting me,' Bernard Tomic said of Tennis Australia
The controversial 22-year-old also took a swing at Rafter, saying: 'They are giving him a budget. He doesn't know what he's doing. What's his job? Deal with it, Pat'
'There has been no respect, I think, towards me... it's been very difficult for me the last year or so in the Tennis Australia group.'
He also accused Rafter of being out of his depth in his role as director.
'He [Rafter] doesn't know what he's doing,' Tomic said.
'They are giving him a budget. He doesn't know what he's doing. What's his job? Deal with it, Pat.'
The remarks led to Tennis Australia axing Tomic from the upcoming Davis Cup quarter-final tie with Kazakhstan
