A man who opened fire on police with a shotgun was killed as two officers returned fire at a suburban Chicago home where two more people were found to have been shot earlier, police said.

The two officers went to the River Forest home at about 7am on Sunday after receiving a 911 call about a woman who was having trouble breathing.

The officers were 'ambushed' by a 24-year-old man when they arrived at the door of the home, located in a normally quiet, tree-lined neighborhood just west of Chicago.

The officers returned fire, killing the attacker, identified as Matthew Watson by ABC 7

River Forest Deputy Police Chief James O'Shea said two officers suffered injuries that weren't life-threatening. One was shot in his bullet-proof vest and the second was treated for other injuries.

Authorities say 60-year-old William Carlson was found dead in the home and the attacker's 59-year-old mother was found with gunshot wounds and taken to a hospital.

Police say shootings inside the home were 'domestic' and happened before they arrived.

The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed the deaths but didn't provide further details.

Neighbors told television news outlets they heard 20 to 30 shots fired. One man who lives next door described how he saw one of officers stumble behind a tree before shooting into the house following the initial gunshot.

There was no word on a possible motive for the violence, and police declined to immediately release any further information about the shootings.
