Three Squared Construction has built this 2,800 sq ft dual family Detroit home in just over six hours
The North Corktown building, which is made entirely of shipping containers and is 70 percent complete, features two apartments with a total of three floors, three bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms
'I think we're going to change people's minds,' CEO Leslie Horn told MLive.com. 'We're creating new history in Detroit.'
Horn is hoping the model dual family home, which is 70 percent complete, will show potential buyers how the shipping container buildings exemplify faster, stronger and more energy-efficient construction.
There are two apartments in the North Corktown complex. The lower 1,800 sq ft unit has two bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms and a full kitchen and balcony.
The second 1,000 sq ft upper apartment has one bedroom, one bathroom and a balcony.
Once it is completely finished, the model complex will have taken less then 60 days to construct.
By comparison, a traditional brick building of the same size could take more than a year to 18 months to build, according Horn's brother Patric, the company's COO.
Three Squared Construction hopes to complete its next two buildings by the end of the year in Woodbridge and Corktown, two of the city's most densely populated neighborhoods.
The Kaline Squared building in Corktown will have eight individual units for sale while Rosa Parks Squared in Woodbridge will have 25 apartments.
The company hopes to complete the Rosa Parks Squared building, in Woodbridge, by the end of the year
The building will have 25 apartments and selling prices will range from between $150,000 for the smallest 640 sq ft apartment and $350,000 for the largest 1,800 sq ft unit
Their selling price will range from between $150,000 for the 640 sq ft apartment, the smallest offered, to $350,000 for the 1,800 sq ft unit, the largest, realtor Jan Dijkers told MLive.com.
The company said the complexes will have ductless heating and air systems as well as tankless water heaters, which will energy costs for each apartment by up to a whopping 80 percent.
And the lead architect for those apartments will boast a familiar and famous name.
Eric Lloyd Wright, the grandson of Frank Lloyd Wright, said despite the building materials, the apartments won't feel like container boxes.
'We will be striving for beauty and harmony with the site, neighborhood and the material pallet on every project,' he told InteriorDesign.net.
'Beauty is one of the most important aspects of sustainability,' he continued.
'Whatever we see as beautiful, we love. What we love, we care for. What we for, endures.'
Some of the metal walls of the shipping container are kept visible on the first floor of the North Corktown model unit, which will take less than 60 days to completely construct and finish
