When is the diet starting, Oprah? Chat show queen piles on the pounds after vowing to lose weight

Despite vowing to drop the pounds, Oprah Winfrey now appears to have put on weight.

The chat show host recently confessed that her weight was making her miserable and hailed 2009 as the ‘year of hopefulness’.

But judging by these pictures, Oprah still has her work cut out for her.

Filming a special episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show in Washington, the media mogul seems to have ditched the diet.

And her schoolteacher style outfit failed to flatter her figure, adding more bulk to her already large frame.

Dressed in a high-wasted floor-length grey skirt and salmon shirt, Oprah joined a host of celebrities on stage after they sang  America’s song’, a patriotic tribute to Obama’s inauguration.

The song was performed by Will.i.am and David  Foster, Faith Hill, Seal, and Mary J Blige and will be available for free download for 24 hours on Oprah.com.

Despite claiming her weight gain made her depressed, Oprah appeared in good spirits as she celebrated Barack Obama's impending first day in the White House.

She also interviewed new Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill.

Jill let it slip that her husband had a pick of two jobs in the Obama administration, claiming Barack Obama gave Biden the choice of being secretary of state or vice president.

The vice president-elect tried to hush his wife as soon as the words came out of her mouth, with a loud ‘shhh!.

Political slip: Oprah interviews Vice President Joe Biden and wife Jill, who accidentally reveals too much

Oprah, 54, who at one point tipped the scales at 14.3 stone, said she was determined to change in 2009.

She said: 'It's not about the food. It's about using food - abusing food.

'Too much work and not enough play. Not enough time to come down. Not enough time to really relax.

'I am hungry for balance. I'm hungry to do something other than work.

Winfrey, who has been diagnosed with a hormonal imbalance known as hypothyroidism, says she is now devoting more time from her 14-hour workday schedule to her own well-being, which includes regular exercise.

She revealed that last year she was forced to mask her figure every month for her cover shot on her O magazine.

She told viewers: 'I've been hiding my body because I didn't want you to see it.

'Here I am, one of the most visible people in the world, trying not to be seen on the cover of my own magazine.'
