Keane went on United's tour last summer but this year he will be following in David Beckham's footsteps
Speaking to Preston's official website, Keane said: 'I'm really excited to be here and I am looking forward to the new season and the challenge ahead.
'I want to come here and do my best to help the team; they had a very successful year last year and hopefully the whole team and the Club can build on that.
'The likes of David Beckham and Danny Welbeck have been here and they all did well and benefited from the experience, so that is something I can hopefully come here and take from it.'
Keane went on tour with United's first-team squad in the United States last season was loaned out to Wednesday in January where he scored three times in 13 appearances.
He will wear the No 9 shirt for Simon Grayson's newly-promoted play-off winners.
Former United defender Rio Ferdinand congratulated the youngster on his move and backed him to make an impact, posting on Twitter: Good luck to #WillKeane at Preston.. #WillScoreGoals'.
