Manchester United have re-entered into negotiations with Southampton over Morgan Schneiderlin.

Sportsmail understands a representative of the Old Trafford club travelled to the south coast on Wednesday in a bid to thrash out a deal for the France international.

United are thought to have tabled an offer of £20million for Schneiderlin last month which was dismissed by Saints boss Ronald Koeman as 'not serious'.

The Red Devils have had a £20million bid rejected and are thought to be back with an improved offer

Talks over bringing the 25-year-old to Manchester then stalled - but the move is now back on and an improved offer is thought to be imminent.

Reds boss Louis van Gaal wants to take Schneiderlin on United's pre-season tour of the US and his side jet out to Seattle on a specially-chartered flight from Manchester Airport on Monday, July 13.

And a United official was driven from Old Trafford to Southampton in a club vehicle on Wednesday morning in a bid to push the deal through.

Southampton are understood to want a fee close to £27m for Schneiderlin, who has also attracted interest from Arsenal and Liverpool.

But United, who see the midfielder as an eventual successor to Michael Carrick, are favourites to win the battle for his services.

Koeman, speaking earlier this week, revealed United had made a bid but dismissed it as not 'serious'.

'We had, two weeks ago, a bid from Manchester United,' he said.

'It wasn't enough. It wasn't serious. And no more bids up to today.'

There is thought to be an agreement that Southampton will not stand in Schneiderlin's way should a Champions League club make an acceptable offer.

'Everybody knows Morgan's situation,' Koeman added. 'I understand that, if he can get a good move to a big club, I understand it.

'But I hope if there is any business that it's soon, because that's best for the player and for us. We have to prepare for what we'd have to do if we sell the player.

'I had a lot of meetings with Morgan. I had another one last week. Everybody knows his situation. But it's important for the player to do a good pre-season. We will see what happens in the next few days.

'I don't talk about money, about numbers. It's not my business. It's up to the club.'
