Sea of simplicity as Angelina Jolie leads the Plain Janes at SAG Awards

They say that hemlines reflect the state of the economy. The same can be said for red-carpet dressing. Last night at the SAG Awards, actresses opted for more of a Plain Jane 'keep-it-simple' look.

Bearing in mind we have hit a full blown recession, acknowledged by Barack Obama in his inauguration speech and reflected by wife Michelle in her simple white ballgown last week, playing-it-safe is definitely the new fashion trend.

But playing it too safe a la Angelina Jolie is just dead boring.

The Oscar nominee, who lost out on an award at the event, wore a Grecian-style Max Azria navy gown and Tiffany jewels.

The blue block colour of her dress was a good choice - block brights are all the rage on the spring/summer catwalks - but the shapeless almost night-gown style of her dress did nothing to show off her gamine figure. The full-length gown revealed her back, but little else as her slim figure was swamped by yards of fabric.

Plain Jane: Angelina Jolie usually looks anything but plain, but her navy blue Max Azria gown struck a dowdy note at last night's Screen Actor's Guild Awards in Los Angeles

And the actress's plain Jane look was echoed among most of the A-list actresses, many of whom also played it safe and opted for single-note block colours for their red carpet moment.

If you're going to play it safe remember at least to keep it a little sexy, just like Kate Winslet did.

Kate is the queen of Plain Jane dressing, and nearly always opts for a simple sheath dress in a bold block colour.

Last night she did not disappoint: A simple but very shapely dress. Tick. A great colour. Tick. Elegant jewels. Tick.

The 33-year-old actress opted for an eye-popping cobalt  blue Narciso Rodriguez gown to accept the Screen Actors Guild 'Actor' trophy for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Reader.

The tight fitting gown showed the actress still has some of her curves despite her recent weight loss which she attributes to daily Pilates sessions.

Electric blue: Kate Winslet wore an eye-popping cobalt blue Narciso Rodriguez gown which she accessorised with diamond Chopard earrings

And actresses Nicollette Sheridan, Holly Hunter and Christina Applegate all opted for colourful variations on the colour block gown, and surprisingly for an awards ceremony, most of the gowns had no embellishment or embroidery.

Breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate fittingly wore an apple-green Emanuel Ungaro gown which she accessorised with Lorraine Schwartz diamonds.

Those who did not play it safe stuck out like a sore thumb.

Colour bolts: Desperate Housewives Nicolette Sheridan, Oscar winner Holly Hunter and Married With Children star Christina Applegate opted for bright one-colour gowns

Star of Rachel Getting Married, actress Anne Hathaway's gown was one of the few to have any sparkle, as she wore a very slim fitting Grecian-style column dress by Azzaro in white which she accessorised with $500,000 of Cartier jewellery.

But whilst Anne Hathaway pulled off the chic cream pleated grecian-style gown to great effect, Teri Hatcher looked like a bridezilla-meringue in her over the top Monique Lhuillier gown.

Diamond girl: Rachel Getting Married star Anne Hathaway wore all-white and $500,000 of Cartier diamonds, as did The Curious Case of Benjamin Button star Taraji  Henson in her white Herve Leroux gown

Getting married in the morning: Teri Hatcher opted for an all-white affair in an origami style gown by Monique L'Huillier

The Desperate Housewives star wore an over-the-top white origami style layered gown which could have easily graced the top of any wedding cake.

While her co-stars Marcia Cross, 46, and Eva Longoria, 33, also wore outlandish gowns by Carolina Herrara, in blue, and Jenny Packham in tangerine orange, which looked out of place in the sea of simplicity.

Classic black made an appearance as usual, with Vicky Cristina star Penelope Cruz, Mad Men's January Jones and veteran actress Susan Sarandon all making appearances in the red carpet favourite.

While Mad Men star January Jones chose an exotic black embellished Andrew Gn dress, with an ornate glimmering gold panel.

And finally one last word - to pull off the Plain Jane look - make sure your hair is super groomed and the one diamond you choose to adorn yourself with is a real dazzler.

Doubt star Amy Adams opted for a plum Giambattista Vialli, while Marisa Tomei, star of surprise hit The Wrestler wore a yellow Elie Saab number
