Arsenal close to reaching an agreement with Zenit for Arshavin in £15m deal

Arsenal have reached a breakthrough in their bid to sign Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St Petersburg.

Zenit St Petersburg general director Maxim Mitrofanov spent Sunday locked in talks with the Barclays Premier League club, with the Russians indicating that the two sides were much closer on their valuation of the 27-year-old forward.

It is unclear whether Arsenal have increased their £12million bid - rising to £15m with add-ons - but Zenit have abandoned hope of raising £20m from the sale.

Deal or no deal? Arsenal have set a deadline of today to complete the
signing of Russian midfielder Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St Peterburg

Arsenal are understood to have set a deadline of today to complete the transfer and the Zenit board were meeting today to hear from Mitrofanov and make a decision on the offer.

Arshavin told Russian newspaper Sport Express: 'I'm waiting for a final decision. The talks don't depend on me. I haven't been in touch with the club management, so I haven't heard a clear "yes" or "no" yet.'

Arshavin is at Zenit's pre-season training camp in Dubai but played no part in their opening match against the Uzbekistan national team on Saturday.
