Could you carry off statement sunnies? Sky TV newsreader Samantha Simmonds tests the most outrageous

  • Samantha Simmonds has been a presenter for Sky News since 2005
  • The mother-of-three tried out eight pairs of statement sunnies
  • She gave a £17.99 pair from Zara the highest score with a 5/5
  • 'The shape is great - big and wide, just as I like them,' Simmonds said

PREMIUM PAIR: 4/5

When I saw the price of these glasses from Fendi, I was almost too scared to try them on. But when I did my heart did a little flip. The contrast edging at the corners had a magical lifting effect on my face. Suddenly I had cheekbones and everything looked that little bit narrower. Luckily, you can find similar designs in Accessorize or Topshop for a fraction of the price.

DENIM DUTY: 2/5

Good in theory - a pair of sunglasses to match my jeans. However, when I slipped them on, I felt conspicuous, as if I was trying to be too cool for school. They didn’t make me feel glamorous, more a mum trying hard to be trendy. They’re a bit angular for my face, too. If the price wasn’t so steep I’d have given them to my daughter to play dress-up.

 FULL MOON: 1/5

This pair made me think of Johnny Depp in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. Too big, too round and too ridiculous. Not only did they teeter off my nose, but the colour gradient on the lenses meant that my eyes were visible - not what you want when you’re on five hours’ sleep a night. Worse yet, the shape concealed my cheekbones and made my face look fatter.

SULTRY STRIPES: 5//5

I immediately react badly to the black-and-white striped frames, assuming the other mums (and dads) on the school run might mistake me for a Newcastle United fan. But I try these glasses on and am pleasantly surprised. The shape and fit is great - big and wide, just as I like them - and the stripes add a stylish, fun twist that I really like.

 CAT’S EYE COOL: 4/5

My goodness, these sharp corners could have had my eye out! They’re a trendy take on the traditional cat’s eye style, which is great for older women as the corners give the illusion of lifting the face. Even though the glasses felt flimsy and light, when I looked in the mirror, I certainly liked what I saw. They seem to have lifted my face, taking a good few years off.

 ALL WHITE: 4/5

On the school run, I try to sidle in and out of the playground without fuss, but this pair of cat’s eye sunnies scream: ‘Look at me!’ The creamy white frame made me feel like an Italian mafia wife: uber-sophisticated, glamorous and just a little bit dangerous. I suffer from summer hay fever and the wide shape was brilliant for masking my puffy eyes. Ciao bella!

 HAUTE HEART: 2/5

These heart-shaped sunglasses are at the cutting edge of style, or so I’m told. Yes, they’re cute, funky - and perfect for someone 30 years younger than me. I could wear them to a Seventies fancy dress party, but they might elicit a few giggles on the school run. Nope, sorry, I don’t ‘heart’ these. Your daughter, or granddaughter will, however.

 LOVELY LEOPARD: 2/5

I like a classic leopard print, but the emphasis at the top of these glasses - just at the eyebrows - doesn’t work well for my face shape. They’re too small and end up making my jawline look too square. The look is trying to be sexy secretary, but it’s certainly not saying that to me. More like fusty mummy.
