Tourists were looking for great white sharks off the coast of Gansbaai, South Africa, south-east of Cape Town, with Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island Cruises when they watched the life-or-death moment unfold on Tuesday.

According to Marine Dynamics, the seal managed to avoid becoming the shark’s prey.

The tour operator wrote on its blog: ‘The predation attempt was so close to our vessel Whale Whisperer that guests on board were splashed by all the activity.

‘This time the seal’s stealth and speed won the day and he escaped this legendary predator.’
