Cancer-battle Simon MacCorkindale makes TV comeback in New Tricks

Simon MacCorkindale is returning to work for the first time since revealing that he is battling incurable cancer.

The former Casualty actor is taking a starring role in hit BBC police drama New Tricks, alongside regulars Amanda Redman, Dennis Waterman, James Bolam and Alun Armstrong.

It will be his first television role since leaving Casualty last year, after appearing in 229 episodes as dashing consultant Harry Harper.

Back at work: Simon MacCorkindale, seen here with his actress partner Susan George, will star in New Tricks

The 57-year-old told The Mail on Sunday: ‘I’ve always enjoyed New Tricks and am delighted to be involved in the new season. I’m sure it has been said before but, in a so-called ageist world, it’s a healthy reminder that you can teach old dogs new tricks.’

He has already begun filming, playing a wealthy art patron who is drawn into an investigation of the death of a graffiti artist. The new series, due to air next summer, has been extended to ten episodes.

The actor, married to actress Susan George, revealed his three-year battle with bowel cancer in The Mail on Sunday last month and how, despite a successful operation to remove a tumour, the disease had spread to his lungs.

The couple had kept his illness secret.

He said: ‘We thought no one needed to know because,  for the first year or so, we didn’t think it was that serious.

‘On a more practical level, showbusiness is a difficult  place in which to work when people think you’re sick.

‘People also have such a fear  of the “C” words – cancer and chemotherapy. They have a hugely negative impact. But I’m sitting here feeling perfectly healthy,
as active as I’ve ever been.’

He has been helping his wife run their stud farm, breeding horses in Exmoor.
