Brian Laws's third anniversary in charge at Hillsborough ended in misery as Kaspars Gorkss struck in clinical fashion eight minutes from time.

Ther Sheffield side were in trouble in the 10th minute, Adel Taarabt stabbing the ball to Jay Simpson who  tucked  the ball beyond the advancing Lee Grant from 15 yards for his sixth of the season.

Rangers should have had a second, Taarabt, on loan from Spurs, this time picking out Wayne Routledge, his low strike beating Grant  but hitting the foot of the post, before Wednesday were back on level terms on 13 minutes, Darren Potter the architect as winger Jermaine Johnson cut in from the left flank to finish with an angled strike.

The impressive Taarabt lashed the ball into the side netting before Simpson broke through to finish with a fierce  shot from 16 yards snatched on the line by Grant.

Wednesday midfielder Tommy Miller hit the post but it was substitute Gorkss who had the final word snatching victory in the 82 nd minute heading in an Alejandro Faurlin corner.
