Watford manager Malky Mackay expressed his delight after he saw his side bounce back from last weeks 5-0 drubbing at West Brom with this comfortable win.

Delight: Mackay

'I was very pleased with the performance after last week's loss,' he said. 'We were up against a very experienced Preston team so to get a clean sheet, play as well as we did and create so many chances was very pleasing.'

Watford took the lead in the ninth minute when Heidar Helguson headed home Don Cowie's cross and it was doubled just before the break when their two on-loan starts; Manchester United's Tom Cleverley and Arsenals Henri Lansbury teamed up - the latter setting up the former to fire home.

Tom Parkin and Paul Parry both went close for the visitors but the home side spurned chances to record a more emphatic win.

Preston manager Alan Irvine said: 'We were very poor all over the pitch. The second half was better but it would have been very difficult to have been any worse. It was an unacceptable performance.'
