Manchester City FA Women's Super League match sets new attendance record
- A record crowd of 2,102 attended match between Man City and Birmingham
- Five members of England's World Cup team featured in the the game
- Women's Super League leaders Chelsea also drew in a large crowd
Manchester City claimed an attendance record on Sunday as interest in the FA Women’s Super League reached a new high in the wake of England Lionesses’ World Cup heroics.
A crowd of 2,102 turned out at the Academy Stadium to see City — including five members of the England team which finished in third place in Canada — beat Birmingham City Ladies 1-0.
The figure beat the previous recorded best of 2,057 for the match between Notts County and Liverpool in May, and eclipsed City’s old record of 1,412 for their 2014 Continental Cup win over Everton.

The game set a new Super League attendance record by attracting a crowd 2,102 to the Academy Stadium

Super League leaders Chelsea also revelled in a four-figure crowd as 1,233 spectators turned up to see their comfortable 4-1 win over Bristol Academy, while 2,016 saw Liverpool Ladies record a shock 3-1 win at Arsenal Ladies.
An audience of 1.6million stayed up late to watch the Lionesses’ injury-time defeat by Japan in their World Cup semi-final in Edmonton this month.
