Twilight sequel New Moon is slated by critics... but wins over loyal fans

After months of eager expectation Twilight fans finally got their latest dose of Robert Pattinson last night, with the midnight opening of New Moon.

The second installment of the Twilight saga broke box office records by taking £486,210 when it opened at cinemas around Britain at midnight.

But while fans camped out overnight for their Twilight fix, the critics were less impressed.

Daily Mail reviewer Chris Tookey concluded: 'This is a mere six minutes longer than the first Twilight movie, but it feels like six hours.

'I gave the original four stars, but the sequel is tedious, long-winded and not so much undead as almost entirely devoid of life.'

He wasn't alone in his dismissal of the vampire tale.

The Telegraph claimed: 'Twilight loses the plot the more it tries to emphasise it.'

And in the U.S. People magazine wasn't impressed.

'Though the battles between good and evil vampires and between vampires and wolves generate excitement, mostly Moon is a stilted, soapy supernatural romance.

'You'd have to be an already ardent Twilight fan – girls and moms, you know who you are – to get moony over this teen twaddle.'

But some enjoyed the movie.

The Guardian called it 'uproariously weird and engaging', concluding that 'it is, in its unworldly way, sweetly idealistic with a charm all of its own: a teen romance to get your teeth into.'

And Empire magazine saw the money-making potential: 'A sometimes girlie swirl of obsession that will delight fans, this faithful adaptation is after teenage blood, and will most likely hit a box office artery.'
