Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola says it was an 'honour' to manage Manchester United-bound Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Schweinsteiger is set to join United for a fee in the region of £15million and touched down in England to complete a medical on Sunday.

The Germany international has spent 17 years with Bayern and Guardiola admitted it was the World Cup winner's decision to leave.

'It was a big honour for me to be his manager,' he said. 'We talked prior to the season and I said: "You decide, Basti".'

Schweinsteiger explained his move on a video posted to his Facebook account, saying he wanted to gain experience with a new club. 

The 30-year-old made 500 first-team appearances for Bayern, scoring 67 times, and won the Bundesliga with the club on eight occasions.

Guardiola confirmed Schweinsteiger's reasons for leaving, and thanked him for his service to the Bundesliga champions.  

'It was Bastian's personal decision. He wants to have this experience.

'But many, many thanks to Basti.'
