Trainer Sean Curran is earning a reputation as a handler adept at returning horses from a lengthy break and Iris de Balme (Chepstow, nap, 2.10) has the opportunity to enhance that record in today’s Coral Welsh National.

At first glance, an absence of more than 600 days looks a near insurmountable mountain to climb for the nine-year-old, but Curran has sent out a couple of winners recently from similar layoffs and his charge has already shown he boasts the quality to land a National having bagged the Scottish version in 2008.

The selection beat Halcon Genelardais by 14l that day, despite finding the ground plenty quick enough, yet is nearly three times the price of his old rival today.

Curran’s charge goes well for an inexperienced rider having won in the hands of a conditional at Ayr and, while no certainty, could give his supporters some fun at a big price.
