Territories wins Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly after thrilling last-to-first charge

  • Territories raced from the back to win the Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly
  • The runner-up in the 2000 Guineas won by a comfortable half a length
  • Charlie Hills was denied victory when Dutch Connection finished second

Territories, runner-up to Gleneagles in the 2000 Guineas, produced a terrific last-to-first charge to land the Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly at the expense of Dutch Connection, thus denying trainer Charlie Hills a second Group 1 prize of the weekend following Muhaarar's Darley July Cup win.

Andre Fabre's son of Invincible Spirit was anchored in rear by Mickael Barzalona as Aktabantay set what looked a very generous early pace.

That tactic looked a smart one as Territories loomed alongside Dutch Connection inside the final furlong to score cosily by half a length without his rider required to get serious.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Lisa-Jane Graffard of Godolphin said of the winner: 'This was a very accomplished performance by Territories, who showed his class.

'Mickael rode a cool race and did not panic. Territories was a bit further back than we wanted but the leaders went very fast.

'He will remain at a mile and might go for the Deauville race (Prix Jacques le Marois on August 16).'

Barzalona told the Godolphin website: 'The leaders have gone very quickly.

'I was soon some way last, but Territories is very good and showed tremendous acceleration.'
