Ashley Young had a surprise waiting for him when he turned up to Manchester United's pre-season training session at their Carrington HQ.

The winger turned 30 on Thursday and Young's team-mates did not let him forget it by buying him balloons that spelled it out for the man with 30 caps and seven goals for England.

Young is expected to sign an extension on his current contract before the Barclays Premier League season begins with the deal likely to keep him at Old Trafford until 2018.

It would be the least the 30-year-old deserves after an outstanding season under manager Louis van Gaal which saw the attacker regularly keep Angel di Maria out of their starting XI.

United took no chances with Young as they avoided the same fiasco which almost saw Yaya Toure leave their neighbours Manchester City last year when they snubbed the midfielder's birthday.

Young wrote with the post on Twitter: 'Came into training to find these today, cheers lads!'

It came a day after he was spotted on Wimbledon's Centre Court with former United and England great David Beckham.

The pair were photographed chatting ahead of Andy Murray's straight-sets win over Canada's Vasek Pospisil with Beckham's son Romeo, 12, also in the stands.
