Cashmere is made from the downy undercoat of goats who live in extremely cold climates.

The shawls arrived in Europe when a French military commander sent one home. Soon, there was a thriving cashmere manufacturing industry in Europe.

In 2005, relaxed import quotas resulted in rock bottom prices, such as Asda's infamous £17.50 cashmere sweater.

But even though it's available at High Street prices, this soft, warm knit has kept its luxury status.
