'I never meant to hurt a single soul': Mother of twins who became an internet sensation when she posted hilarious signs about her frustrations hits back at angry critics

  • Annie Nolan, 26, is mum to two-year-old twin girls, Delphine and Cheska
  • The blogger is constantly asked the same questions about her kids
  • Annie, from Melbourne, decided to write the answers to her FAQs on signs
  • She uploaded a snap of her girls holding them in their prams to Facebook
  • The post has been viewed more than two million times in two days

A young mother who made hilarious signs for her twins' pram to avoid frequently asked questions from strangers has hit back at critics, saying it was only intended as a joke for family and friends.

Annie Nolan, from Melbourne, took a snap of her two-year-old twin girls Delphine and Cheska in their prams holding the signs and uploaded them to her blog's Facebook page last Thursday.

But the 26-year-old blogger, who has since been bombarded with mixed responses, took to social media to 'address a couple of frequently raised comments' after the post grabbed global attention.

'It was intended mostly for 4 [sic] specific friends who have twins, for a laugh. I could hardly predict the reaction it was going to have,' she posted on Monday afternoon.

'This photo was staged. I did not actually walk them around like this. It was more "wouldn't you love to do this somedays?" [sic] to parents of twins. Some agree, some don't. That's fine.

'I absolutely NEVER meant to hurt a single soul with this photo. If you knew me, you would know that if I think the pet cat is upset with me, I can't sleep! I am grateful for my children EVERYDAY.'

The response follows after the mother-of-three came up with a cheeky way to fend off the inquiries by writing her answers on signs for her twins to hold.

'Yes, they are mine. Yes, they are twins. Yes, both girls. No, not identical. Yes, I know they look alike though. Yes, I'm sure they aren't identical,' reads one of the signs.

'Conceived by f***ing. Born via c-section. You have twins in your family? *great*. They don't run in my family...until now. Yes, my hands are full (sometimes with two glasses of wine just to get through). Yes, triplets would be harder,' the other sign reads.

On Monday, Ms Nolan defended claims after receiving a number of negative comments since her post went viral, saying: 'If I had of known it was going to be this big, I wouldn't of sworn'.

'It was my way of expressing my frustration with the "are they natural" question. It is as if to say that there is something unnatural about IVF conceived children.

'When my girls were in intensive care you have no idea how hard I prayed (and i dont [sic] consider myself religious!) So the comments made by people who can't conceive a child or have lost a child telling me I should "be happy that I even have kids" really affected me.'

Ms Nolan said she also had people questioned her physique, saying 'she looks like she spends all her time in the gym. I bet her kids don't even see her'.

But the young mother cheekily responded: 'THANK YOU SO BLOODY MUCH! I know you meant to offend me but you have made my day.

'I have been to the gym twice in my life so the fact that you even thought that, makes this mum that is currently sitting on the couch in her dressing gown with kids jumping on her SO HAPPY!'

Despite the backlash, Ms Nolan assured her followers, family and friends that she has been ignoring the negative comments because 'a key rule is that you should never try to reason with them'.

'I don't want anyone stressing about me not taking things well,' she posted.

'None of the nasty comments even scratch the surface of what you should take seriously and what you should let upset you. Sending lots of love and laughter to everyone. Annie xx.'

Ms Nolan, who runs Uncanny Annie, said the signs came to light after spending the evening with other 'twin mums' and joking about the amount of times they were asked the exact same questions.

'My kids are honestly my favourite topic of conversation, my friends must be so sick of me talking about them, so the signs weren't me saying that I don't want to talk to people about my kids, I love it,' Ms Nolan told Daily Mail Australia on Saturday.

'I wrote the questions just as a tongue-in-cheek way to list the most common ones I get, you can almost predict the ones that people will ask- although sometimes people are way too cheeky in what they think they should ask,' she said.

'90 per cent of the time people who stop me are just lovely and genuinely want to talk to me about my children, but sometimes I feel like a broken record.'

The 26-year-old is a stay-at-home mum and is vision impaired, which means that she spends a large portion of the day walking to and from public transport, and finds it hard to be constantly stopped when she is trying to keep to a routine.

'I'm so happy to talk but I don't think people understand that it's tiring being a mum of twins, or just multiple kids. We're fighting the poo-feed-sleep-bath schedule and stopping to talk all the time interrupts the strict routine that we hold to just to keep our world turning,' she said.

'Sometimes I get asked the most intrusive and inappropriate questions, everything from whether they are 'natural' babies to whether I every considered aborting them,' she said.

'One woman even told me that if I had aborted one of the twins I would have had an easier pregnancy, and that because they were born prematurely they would have learning difficulties when they're older.'

The post on her blog's Facebook page has received more than two million views in two days, which Annie said shocked her.

'I genuinely did not think it would be so popular, I just posted it as a joke for my four friends. I'm just little old Annie from Melbourne,' she said.

'I do think that it's in part because 'twin parents' can relate. Most of the feedback I got was from parents saying "this is so true, this is exactly my life and the questions I get asked",' Annie said.

'I'm so glad that people responded to it because it was posted for a laugh and just to show the funny questions we face every day.'

The 26-year-old said she hadn't been expecting the negative comments since sharing her photo.

'A few people have posted saying that I should be grateful that I have twins, or that what I was experiencing was a first world problem,' Ms Nolan told Daily Mail Australia.

'Other people are absolutely facing really awful situations and issues that are of course much graver than answering questions each day, but that doesn't lessen the experience of people who have twins and what we go through every day.

'I'll be up at the supermarket and get asked questions looking awful with crusty weetbix in my hair with my twins trying to bite and pull things off shelves, and I suppose I'm trying to say that we don’t go through nothing,' she said.

'I went onto the Multiple Birth Association website which said that mothers of 'multiples' are twice as likely to be at risk of post-natal depression and have a 50 per cent higher risk of divorce before their children enter school.'

Despite her frustrations with the questions, the mum-of-three said that she and her partner, Liam Picken, who plays AFL for the Western Bulldogs, haven't ruled out having more kids.

'People often presume that now we have three we'e done with kids but who know?' Annie said.

'However Malachy was a twin, although we lost his twin at ten weeks. So that along with Delphine and Cheska means that if I get pregnant again we're risking having five kids,' she said.

'That's probably exceeding my capacities a bit, so I'm on so much contraception at the moment.'
