There are precious few left of Michael Foot's kind in Parliament

Michael Foot

True socialist: Michael Foot

There were many huge issues on which this newspaper and Michael Foot did not agree.

His support for nationalisation. His craven appeasement of the unions. His belief in high taxation.

And, most worryingly, his commitment to nuclear disarmament during the Cold War.

But what is undeniable is that Mr Foot was a man with passionate socialist beliefs to which he doggedly clung.

Naive romantic and economic illiterate he may have been, but he was a great thinker, spellbinding orator and dedicated Parliamentarian, who  -  as yesterday's tributes showed  -  was admired by friends and foes alike.

There are precious few of his kind in Westminster today. The Labour Party  -  which he can barely have recognised in later years  -  and Parliament are all the poorer for his passing.
