Richard Madeley is in talks to become the new voice of Radio 2 amid plans for a new weekend show.

The former TV talk show star is being lined up as a regular presenter for the station after sitting in for other presenters such as Sarah Kennedy, Simon Mayo and Zoe Ball.

Bosses are understood to have been impressed with his performances when deputising and are now putting together proposals for a permanent slot on the station.

Madeley, 53, has also been approached informally about taking the seat on The One Show following the departure of Adrian Chiles, who quit to join ITV last month.

There is speculation that the corporation will offer him a joint TV and radio deal in the way Jonathan Ross worked across both services.

Madeley, who in the past has been associated with ITV and Channel 4, has been appearing increasingly frequently on the BBC in recent weeks.

As well as providing holiday cover for Radio 2 presenters he has also been seen as a commentator on political shows like The Daily Politics and This Week, both presented by Andrew Neil.

When asked about his future on the radio station, he said: 'It has been a long term goal to join Radio 2 at some level. I like them, they like me and the intention is to work exclusively with Radio 2. It is the biggest station in Europe.'

He said he was keen for the show to be live and to include editorial content as well as music.

Speaking about The One Show, he added: 'I am happy to talk to them. It is a very informal approach and there is nothing on paper.'

He also confirmed he would not be appearing on this year's Strictly Come Dancing, despite rumours he was in line to take part.

Madeley echoed the view that the previous series of the dance show had been disappointing. He said: 'Last year wasn't the best of the series.'

Last week it was revealed that Madeley once held a secret passion for Anna Ford.

He revealed that she was his first crush and spoke about her 'luminous' beauty.

The presenter, whose other half Judy Finnigan, is set to have his family history traced after agreeing to take part in Who Do You Think You Are?
