Manchester United v Bayern Munich take two as Germans eye swoop for Red Devils target Manuel Neuer

By Sportsmail Reporter

Bayern Munich have already knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League and now the German giants want to beat their rivals to the signing of Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

United have searched far and wide for Edwin van der Sar's long-term replacement and recently sent goalkeeping coach Eric Steele to check out Germany international Neuer.

However, the intensifying interest from England has stirred Munich into action.

In demand: Europe's biggest clubs have been tracking Neuer

Club president Franz Beckehnbauer admitted: 'We will look for a goalkeeper in the summer. (Hans-Joerg) Butt has played a strong season but he is not the future.'

Bayern have struggled between the sticks since Oliver Kahn retired nearly two years ago and 35-year-old Butt was called in to replace the hapless Michael Rensing.

Neuer, 24, has a growing reputation in Germany - conceding just 28 in 30 Bundesliga games this season - and is in contention to be his country's first choice at the World Cup this summer.
