Manchester United captain Gary Neville has signed a new one-year contract and will remain with the Barclays Premier League champions next season.

There had been speculation earlier in the season that the 35-year-old would hang up his boots at the end of the current campaign after suffering 18 months of persistent injury problems.

But Neville has roared back to form in the last three months and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed this morning that his captain will remain at the club for another year.

Ferguson said: 'His comeback has been fantastic. He has astonished me with what he has done. 'Certain players make careers out of determination and a will to do well. 'I think Gary Neville is one of those players and we are really pleased that he will be staying.

'His performance levels recently have been outstanding and what elevates him is that he has come back to fitness after one and a half years of injuries.

'Any physio will tell you that if you get injured for that long in your early 30s then you are in serious trouble.'

Ferguson also confirmed Sportsmail's exclusive story that Wayne Rooney is in contention for Sunday's game at Sunderland after recovering from a groin injury.

'Rooney has returned to training today and is in contention for the weekend. Defender Rio Ferdinand is also back on the training pitch.'
