Now for the glitz: Amanda Holden leads celeb turnout at Piers Morgan's wedding party (after low-key nuptials)

His wedding last month was an uncharacteristically low-key affair involving a quiet village church and the local pub.

But flamboyant Britain’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan returned to form last night by throwing the showbiz party of the year.

The celebrity-studded affair, to publicly celebrate his tying the knot with journalist Celia Walden, was attended by Amanda Holden, his fellow judge on the hit ITV1 show, and presenters Ant and Dec. But Simon Cowell was not seen arriving with the other guests.

Also at the bash in the pretty village of Newick, East Sussex, where Piers’ parents live, was The Apprentice’s Lord Alan Sugar, who arrived in his Rolls-Royce Phantom, as well as presenter Kirsty Gallacher.

Other than Cowell, the only other notable absentee was Cheryl Cole, who is recovering in hospital after contracting malaria from an insect bite while on holiday in Tanzania.

Among the first to arrive were celebrity chef Raymond Blanc, still on crutches after breaking a leg falling down the stairs in March, cricketer Kevin Pietersen, and former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell with partner Fiona Millar.  Conservative communications chief Andy Coulson was also present.

Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli said he would not seek to get Piers on the dancefloor, but joked: ‘I’m going to get him drunk.’

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s wife Sarah, wearing a Nicole Farhi patterned dress, was there with Mr Brown’s brother Andrew and his wife.

Claudia Winkleman arrived with BBC news presenters Katie Derham and Kirsty Young.

Meanwhile, Ms Holden showed off a floor-length green and blue Ralph & Russo gown.

She and husband Chris Hughes brought a case of Cloudy Bay wine, wrapped to match Amanda’s dress. Guests had been asked to bring no presents except for a bottle of their favourite wine to help Piers, a keen wine buff, expand his cellar.

Party-goers were treated to a hog roast and there was a massive teepee in the garden. TV journalists included Andrew Neil, Sophie Raworth, Emily Maitlis, Jeremy Bowen and Adam Boulton, as well as departing One Show host Christine Bleakley, wearing an electric blue dress and silver sandals.

Mail on Sunday columnist Piers, 45, married Celia, 33, on June 24 in a quiet ceremony in the Oxfordshire village where Celia’s parents live.

Last night, Piers made a speech about his wife joking: ‘I can see what you’re all thinking – hasn’t she done well?’

The father of three and his first wife Marion divorced in 2008 after nearly 20 years. He and Celia, the daughter of the former Conservative MP George Walden, met on a photoshoot for GQ magazine, when he gushed about her being a Brigitte Bardot lookalike.

Piers, who is also a judge on America’s Got Talent, is hotly tipped to replace veteran American talk-show heavyweight Larry King on CNN.

But his US career means he will not have time to nurse his hangover today, as he is flying to Hollywood with Celia to work on America’s Got Talent.
