While most are questioning where the next striker will come from following Robin Van Persie's exit, coach Louis van Gaal wants to ensure he has enough leaders and more aggression in his squad to take the club forward.

Ramos has indicated to United he wants to come to Old Trafford and van Gaal remains hopeful Ed Woodward can strike an agreement where David de Gea will go to Madrid in the same deal.

Woodward has also asked for Madrid's Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas but that element has been dismissed at this stage.

United though still have eyes on the combative Otamendi and Valencia are braced for a bid for their star defender.

Madrid also like the Argentine as a possible replacement for Ramos should he go but Otamendi is keen on a move that would team him with compatriot Marcos Rojo at United.

Valencia insist he will not go for less than his buyout clause of £35.6million.

United want to assemble a squad that matches the likes of Real Madrid but may step back from Otamendi if they can succeed with Ramos.

Santos are in talks to sign QPR midfielder Sandro on a season loan.

The 26-year-old Brazilian has been left in limbo after the Home Office declared he did not have a work permit last season and the club were told to stop selecting him.

He went on holiday to Brazil but, following a Home Office investigation, Rangers' sponsor licence, which allows clubs to apply for visas for players from non-EU countries, was suspended.

Without the licence Rangers can still sign players from non-EU countries but they cannot play until the suspension is lifted. Sandro cannot play here until he has a working visa.

QPR signed Sandro from Tottenham last summer for £10m.

Chris Ramsey's side are in Italy for their pre-season tour but Sandro is not part of the squad. He took to Twitter to write: 'Can someone let me know about my situation please!!!!!'.
