Manchester United confirm Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin signings as Louis van Gaal says he is 'truly delighted' to have brought in 'ultimate pro'

Louis Van Gaal headed off on pre-season tour to America convinced that he has just signed the midfield general Manchester United have been missing.

United completed the signing of German international Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich for £14m on Monday morning after Van Gaal persuaded the 30-year-old to leave his spiritual home.

Van Gaal said: 'There is no doubting his talent and his ability to control games. He brings a wealth of experience and is an excellent addition to our squad.

'His record speaks for itself; he has won every honour at club level and was a major part of the successful Germany World Cup winning team last summer.

'Bastian is the ultimate professional and of course, no stranger to me.

'I worked with him during my time at Bayern Munich and I am truly delighted he is joining Manchester United.'

Sportsmail revealed United's interest in Schweinsteiger back in May but the club's dialogue with the World Cup and Champions League winner actually dates back to March.

Van Gaal believes that the German will bring control and authority to the centre of United's midfield, something that has been sadly missing in recent seasons

HOW SPORTSMAIL BROKE THE NEWS FIRST...

After passing his medical on Monday morning, Schweinsteiger said: 'I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bayern Munich, it has been an incredible journey and I didn't take the decision to leave lightly.

'Manchester United is the only club that I would have left Munich for.

'I feel ready for this new and exciting challenge in what I regard as the most competitive league in the world and I am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal again.

'I will never forget my time at Bayern Munich and I would like to thank everyone at the club and the fans for the great memories.'

Schweinsteiger was joined on Monday by Morgan Schneiderlin, whose signing was also confirmed by the club.

New signings Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian spent Monday morning being fitted for their new United club suits, ahead of the club's pre-season tour.

After the club confirmed the signings, the club's tailor posted pictures with all three men as they were measured up for their new outfits, with jackets sporting the Manchester United crest as well as the club's red and black tie.

The pair will be part of Van Gaal's touring party which leaves for America on Monday afternoon, ahead of games against Mexican side Club America on Saturday, MLS club San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday, and then European giants Barcelona and PSG next week.

It will be a chance for fans to see all three of their new stars in action, while Memphis Depay, signed at the end of last season, is also expected to get a first run-out for the club.

Schneiderlin underwent a medical with the club on Monday as he prepared to join Schweinsteiger and Darmian at Old Trafford, in a spending spree that has seen Van Gaal splash £52m in just a few days.

THE OTHER MANCHESTER UNITED BADGE - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Manchester United's three new signings all posed in their new club suits, each of which was emblazoned with the club's crest.

The badge, an alternative to the red and yellow 'red devils' logo that adorns the club's kit, is based on the Manchester City Council's coat of arms, with a couple of small changes.

There is a ship, which refers to the city's status as a centre of trade, thanks to the ship canal, alongside the globe on top, which is also related to Manchester's role as a global trade city.

The swarm of bees, which cover the globe, is to symbolise the hard work and industry at the heart of Manchester's work ethic - the bee being seen as the animal that best sums up the high-energy of the industrial revolution, in which the city played a major part.

Either side of the red and yellow shield are lion, wearing a castle crown, and an antelope, each adorned with the red rose of Lancashire.

The Antelope wears a gold chain - a nod to the city's history of engineering, while the lion's crown harks back to the Roman origins of the town, as the settlement of Castlefield.

Rounding off the badge is the Latin motto 'Consilio et Labore', or in English 'Wisdom and effort'.
