£2billion a year: Bosses' bill for apprentice levy...Total for big firms could be larger still if Government cuts its funding

A general view of the 'Gherkin' and Canary Wharf at sunrise in the City of London as confidence in the state of the economy among small and medium-sized businesses is increasing, according to a new report.
Half believe the economy will improve in 2015, up from a third in a previous poll two years ago, a survey of more than 500 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) showed. Employment and pension regulations, tax compliance, and health and safety were named as the biggest problems for SME bosses. Jason Eatock, of insurance firm Zurich, which conducted the survey, said: "It's clear that regulation is still a major headache for small and medium businesses which may not have the manpower to keep on top of the raft of new legislation."

Winner or loser: What was in the Budget for you? It's good news for the over 65s and self-employed who will be hundreds of pounds better off but low-income families will be hit hardest

Winner or loser: What was in the Budget for you?

Osborne's new budget will see young workers, families of four and the self-employed all better off. Couples with joint earnings of more than £100,000 will see the biggest benefit with an extra £241 a year while retired people will also be more than £200 better of every year. But the changes are not good news for everyone. Low income families will be hit the hardest. Those families where one parent works earning £20,000 a year will be more than £2,000 worse off as the threshold at which tax credits are withdrawn is cut from £6,420 to £3,850 and benefits are capped at £23,000 in London and £20,000 elsewhere.

Banks set to cash in on cuts to the savings safety net as they could use new limit to dump
