High hopes: Luca Cumani

Mabait is to get Luca Cumani's strong challenge at next month's Dubai Carnival underway when he tackles the synthetic surface Tapeta for the first time in round one of the Al Maktoum Challenge at Meydan on January 13.

The son of Kyllachy was a consistent performer on grass last summer when he progressed from handicap company to land a Listed contest at Pontefract in July.

Following that, the four-year-old ran well on his first ever foreign assignment when third to Pressing in the Group Two Topkapi Trophy in Turkey in September before finishing fifth to Red Clubs on his return home in the Group Two Challenge Stakes at Newmarket the following month.

Cumani said: 'We have six horses out there at present as Fiery Lad and Summit Surge didn't make the trip but we are hoping Bauer will join them next month.

'Hopefully,Mabait will be the first to run in the Maktoum Challenge and we want to see how he handles the Tapeta surface as we hope to point him towards the Godolphin Mile on World Cup night.

'He won twice at Wolverhampton in his younger days but that was in a lower grade and If he doesn't act on it we will have to have a rethink and run him back on grass.'

He added: 'The plan is for Bauer to go after Christmas and there are plenty of races for stayers at the Carnival starting on January 27.'
