Bill Cosby before he was famous... as a young American football star

Long before he made a nation laugh with his The Bill Cosby Show, the veteran comedian was a star.

Cosby has revealed his college photo - as a fullback on the American Football team.

The 73-year-old comic showed off the picture as he appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Cosby won a track and field scholarship to Philadelphia's Temple University in 1961 and played fullback on the American football team.

Cosby said: 'The barber cost 75 cents - it was 75 cents for that haircut.'

Quipped Leno: 'You should get your money back!'

The photo shows a handsome Cosby, in his team jersey, who despite his youth looks remarkably similar to today.

Asked about his performance with the team, Cosby joked: 'I was there, I was there the whole time.

'We had helmets that rang when people tapped you. And we lost to every school in Pennsylvania.

'Usually if I had to tackle somebody I would fall over.'

Although he dropped out of college prior to graduation, Cosby returned to his studies in the Seventies and earning a doctorate of education. He has also been awarded 11 honorary degrees.

Cosby starred in his sitcom for eight years, after getting his TV start with a starring role in the 60s action show I Spy.
