Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti faces anxious wait after Frank Lampard suffers fresh injury blow

By Simon Cass

Chelsea are sweating on the fitness of Frank Lampard after the midfielder limped out of training with a calf injury.

Lampard's condition will be assessed further on Thursday but should the 32-year-old be set for yet another lay-off then it will come as a major blow to Carlo Ancelotti's hopes of reviving his side's flagging hopes of retaining the Barclays Premier League title.

Setback: Frank Lampard (centre) faces another spell on the sidelines

Ancelotti has already had to do without the talismanic midfielder for almost four months this season after a hernia problem was compounded by a further abductor muscle injury.

Lampard has started Chelsea's last six games but is now a doubt for at least Monday night's testing trip to Bolton.

If Ancelotti's worst fears are confirmed and Lampard is indeed set for another spell on the sidelines then the Italian may decide to pull Josh McEachran out of tonight's FA Youth Cup clash against Arsenal.

McEachran was due to play in front of a sell-out crowd at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea youngsters continue the defence of the trophy they won last season against Arsenal.

Bu the highly rated 17-year-old, who has made 13 senior appearances this season, may find next week's trip to the Reebok is now a more pressing engagement.
