Robin van Persie won't be missed by Manchester United, and here's why...

Robin van Persie was greeted at Sabiha Gokcen International Airport on Sunday afternoon by a fanfare of jubilant Fenerbahce supporters ahead of his move to the Turkish club.

Manchester United fans, however, are seemingly in more ambivalent mood over the Dutch striker's departure - on the one hand still emotionally attached to the talisman that lit up their title-winning season in 2012-13, and on the other, content at seeing the back of a player in decline.

With just two goals this calendar year, Van Persie has not reached the dizzy heights he once did, with an obvious decline in his scoring form over the past few seasons correlating with his advancing years.

Having made it to the World Cup final with Holland in 2010, Van Persie enjoyed a sensational year at Arsenal in 2011, finding the back of the net 35 times.

In a record-breaking 2011-12 season he finished as the league's top scorer with 30 goals as the Gunners finished third - he also became only the second player to score against 17 different Premier League opponents in a single campaign.

And in August 2012 he joined Manchester for £24million on the back of that sensational first six months of the year.

He finished 2012 with 27 goals for the calendar year, an extremely impressive return, albeit eight goals short of his previous tally.

Van Persie again won the top flight's Golden Boot in 2013 as he lifted the Premier League in his debut season with Manchester United, finishing the campaign with 26 goals in 38 games.

However, in spite of that incredible season he finished 2013 with 19 league goals -  eight short of his 2012 tally again.

Under new manager David Moyes' reign in the 2013-14 campaign he got off to a blistering start, scoring a brace away at Swansea City on the opening day but he failed to kick-on - playing 17 fewer games, he scored just 12 goals after he endured toe, groin and thigh problems in an injury-ravaged season.

He never looked the same player again for United, and when the end of December came around he had just 13 league goals in 2014.

When compatriot Louis van Gaal took over the throne at Old Trafford in the summer of 2014, Van Persie was expected to rediscover his 2012-13 form but he was blighted by issues with his right ankle, and so far in 2015 he has scored in the league just twice.

The vastly talented Van Persie may well set Turkey's Super Lig alight next season but United fans surely can't be too disheartened to see the 31-year-old leave.
