Both co-stars stuck with black as their base colour for walking the red carpet.

In Laura's case, this meant a sleeveless black top paired with a matching skirt that fell to just above her knees.

The actress kept her accessories simple, wearing little jewellery and opting for plain, black, high-heeled sandals.

Even her hair - blonde and swept back - and makeup - subdued and of a natural colour - managed to not be too flashy.

Ian, on the other hand, dressed up his black suit with a loud, multi-coloured scarf that hung down the front of his outfit.

White trainers added a playful aspect to his look as well.

In the movie, Ian plays the famous detective in the man's later years, after his powers of deduction have been replaced by creeping senility.

Aged 93 in 1947, Sherlock has moved to the countryside where he is cared for by a housekeeper, Mrs. Munro (Laura), and her son, Roger (Milo Parker).

The story has Sherlock looking back more than 30 years to a case he was unable to solve that involved a woman he once loved.

'We see him as a real man, and not at all like the sharp ace detective that was so revered by his friend Dr. Watson,' Ian told DailyMail.com in a recent interview.

'I think audiences will find that rather touching, this idea of seeing the more vulnerable, emotional side of Sherlock,' he added.
