Arsenal release new gold and navy away strip at Singapore kit launch that evokes memories of 2001-02 double winning season

  • Arsenal completed their second Premier League title against Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2002 wearing gold
  • The Gunners have released a fetching away strip that includes retro-style gold diamonds on the body of the shirt
  • North London club launched the kit as Arsene Wenger's side prepare to take part in the Barclays Asia Trophy

Arsenal have released their new gold and navy away strip in a spectacular launch during the Gunners' pre-season tour in Singapore, with manager Arsene Wenger hoping the return to a similar changed strip of the 2001-02 campaign will produce the same degree of success achieved that year.

Sylvain Wiltord's goal at Old Trafford on May 8 2002 clinched the domestic double for Arsenal, who had won the FA Cup against Chelsea four days earlier at the Millennium Stadium.

The arrival of goalkeeper Petr Cech from the Blues this summer has reignited belief among Arsenal fans that the golden days are returning, and the many Southeast Asian supporters who were present for the kit launch in Singapore will hope the new design will prove to be more than just a reminder of past glory.

Arsenal will take part in the Barclays Asia Trophy for the first time this week, with their opening game against a Singapore Select XI on Wednesday preceding a fixture against Premier League opponents Everton or Stoke City at the weekend.

The new Puma kit has a retro feel to it, with the diamond patterns across the chest of the shirt, and a selection of the first team squad posed on stage in the new attire, including club captain Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere and Hector Bellerin.

The strip, which is available to buy now, went down extremely well with hysterical Gunners fans at the fan event in Singapore, who will have been just as gleeful to hear new signing Cech speak on his first few weeks at the club.

The Czech Republic international said: 'My reception at the club from the players and the fans was unbelievable so I am glad that everyone is happy here. I hope everyone will be happy come the end of the season.'

Olivier Giroud added: 'It is always amazing to see you [the fans]. We are all so very happy to be here and hopefully we will win this cup.'
