After a career spanning four decades and a battle with throat cancer, Michael Douglas is looking in great shape - something he has put down to a new diet.

Speaking on ITV's Lorraine today, the 70-year-old revealed that the secret of his improved health is going gluten-free.

The American actor - who stars in action-packed superhero film Ant-Man, due for release this week - also spoke to Lorraine Kelly, 55, about his past battles with alcohol and his marriage to Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Douglas, who has five Golden Globes and two Oscars to his name, revealed: 'I’m great, five years clean and trying [these new diets], something called gluten-free and I must give it high recommendations for you out there.'

Best known for roles in iconic films such as Wall Street and Basic Instinct, the actor has a long history of alcohol abuse, made famous by a 30-day stint in rehab in 1992.

In 2010, the star's battle with throat cancer was announced, which he attributed to years of smoking, stress and his previous alcohol abuse.

Douglas embarked on a successful intensive eight-week course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and lost 20kg on a liquid-only diet.

Now clearly prioritising his health, the award-winning actor has recently gone gluten-free. The diet is popular among celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, 42, and this year's Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, 28.

The protein found in grains such as wheat, rye and barley is excluded - which rules out foods such as pasta, cereals and most types of bread and cake.

The actor went on to speak highly of the diet, championing its health benefits.

He added: 'I’ve lost a few pounds from it already, and it supposedly helps your memory and your energy and so I highly recommend it.'

The actor is due to celebrate his 15th wedding anniversary to Catherine Zeta-Jones, 45, this November.

The marriage initially sparked controversy due to the 25-year age gap but, despite a six-month split in 2013, the pair have enjoyed a solid relationship.

Douglas added: 'We are really, really happy and enjoying our time together and enjoying [time] with the kids, it’s a great time.'

His mother, Diana Dill passed away earlier this month and the actor spoke about her fondly to Lorraine.

He said:'My mother’s side of the family, you should know, is Scottish.

'They were originally, say, privateers and ended up in Bermuda in the 1600s and so my family established itself in Bermuda in the 1600s.

'Bermuda is very special. I was raised there with my mother who passed away just recently and I’ll be taking her ashes back to Bermuda soon.'

The acting legend also spoke about his two children, Dylan Michael, 14, and Carys Zeta, 12.

Speaking of their support, he explained: 'Dylan, my 14-year-old son, takes particular pride in acting as my agent, telling me ‘Dad you have to do this movie, Dad you don’t understand, this is a whole new audience for you!’...

'Now he’s very, very excited about [new film Ant Man] and so is his sister Carys.'

Douglas will be starring opposite Paul Rudd, 46, as Ant-Man's mentor, Dr. Pym, in the superhero Marvel adaptation.
