Looking for a husband...or a wife? Don't move to the West Coast where one in five admit to having had an affair

  • A May 2015 study of 2,000 Americans found that 20 per cent of people who live on the west coast have admitted to cheating on their partner
  • The study found that overall,  20 per cent of men reported having cheating compared to 13 per cent of women
  • Those who lived in the Midwest were the most faithful where just 10 per cent admitted to cheating on their partner

People who live on the West Coast are more likely to cheat on their partner, a new study reveals.

A May 2015 study of 2,000 Americans by Avo found that 20 per cent of people who live in sunnier climes have admitted to cheating on their partner.

Those who lived in the Midwest were the most faithful in their romantic relationships.

Only 10 per cent of Midwesterners report cheating on a partner compared with 16 per cent of people in the Northeast, 17 per cent in the South.

The study, which was focused on relationship trends across the United States , finds that more men than women have cheated on their partner in every U.S. region.

Satisfaction in a relationship doesn't necessarily equal a track record of faithfulness, either.

Despite 95 per cent of those surveyed reporting they were satisfied in their relationship, one in six have cheated on a partner.

Again, men were more likely to report cheating than women with 20 per cent of men reporting having sex with someone without their partner's permission, compared to 13 per cent of women.

Yahoo News spoke with psychologist Ramani Durvasula who said that the study have more to do with the number of big cities on each coast than the behaviors of all people in a certain region.

This particular study did not make a list of specific cities where the most cheating occurred.

Big cities will often have a lot of transplants from other parts of the country who may have moved because they seek a life of more excitement and opportunity.

'These cities are filled with transplants,' she says.

'The very personality traits that lead to someone relocating are likely to result in greater openness, and that can also translate into more ‘a-moral’ behaviors, such as cheating.

Durvasula said that L.A. may have a higher-than-normal rate of cheaters since it’s an artistic and creative city that 'may be more populated by those higher in the trait of openness, which may be more likely to translate into infidelity.

There are also just bigger more populated cities on the west coast like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose than there are in the Midwest.

The biggest city in the Midwest is Chicago, Illinois followed by Indianapolis, Indiana and Columbus, Ohio.

Chicago is the only city in the Midwest with over one million inhabitants whereas all the top three West Coast cities have over a million living there.

Psychiatrist Gail Saltz who wrote, Anatomy of a Secret Life: The Psychology of Living a Lie, said that cheating can happen anywhere and can be influenced by factors such as family history of infidelity.

Cheating is more likely to happen in places where less people are married or where a lot of cheating is going on around them.

'That will change your perception of how okay it is to be unfaithful,' she says, adding that just because someone lives on the west coast it doesn't mean their partner will necessarily cheat on them.
