London Student is a student media startup established as a workers’ co-operative.

London Student relaunched on 5 January 2015 as a digital news organisation seven months after the University of London shut it down. The site relaunched under the interim supervision of Ben Jackson, whose priority was to secure London Student’s future.

In May 2015, five members including Jackson, Ed Ive, Dea Gjinovci, James Smith and Donato Mancini established London Student as a workers’ co-operative.

Brief history

London Student newspaper traces its roots back to at least 1954 when it was called Sennet, and began publishing under its current name in 1979.

The newspaper covered the constituent colleges of the University of London, making it the largest student newspaper in Europe. The print newspaper had a circulation of about 12,500 per fortnight.

It has always been editorially independent, although it was affiliated with the University of London Union (ULU), which was abolished by the University of London in 2014.

When it was associated with ULU, London Student had a paid full-time elected editor, chosen each year in ULU’s student officer elections.

The newspaper has often taken a liberal stance on issues affecting students and university staff. In recent years it has been vocal in its support for Alfie Meadows and the ‘Cops off Campus’ movement.
