Smiling Ben Affleck puts his wedding ring BACK ON for ESPY Awards as he jokes about having his heart broken

It's been claimed that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have decided to wear their wedding rings for the sake of their children.

The 42-year-old actor and his estrange wife have both been spotted out with and without their rings since recently confirming their split after 10 years of marriage and on Wednesday night at the ESPY awards in Los Angeles, Ben made sure his band was firmly in place.

Taking to the stage to present former New York Yankees star Derek Jeter with the ESPN Icon Award, Ben even made a joke about heartbreak, although it was related to sport and not his marriage.

Ben, of course, is a Boston Red Sox fan and he quipped: 'Boston fans can be many things but we know baseball and we respect those that play the game the way it was meant to be played.

'Derek broke my heart 100 times, if not more. And he broke it again when he retired, because he was absolutely one of the very best ever to play the game of baseball.'

It's been claimed that Ben and Jennifer's two daughters, Violet, nine, and Seraphina, six, and three-year-old son Samuel 'are a big part of why they're still wearing their wedding rings'.

A source close to the duo explained to People magazine: 'They just want them to be okay.'

Jennifer, who is currently shooting the upcoming film 'Miracles from Heaven' in Atlanta, is said to have made the devastating decision to pull the plug on their marriage because she was 'didn't want to spend another year of her life being miserable' and was fed up of Ben's passion for gambling, but the brunette beauty is now 'doing great.'

The insider said: '[She] is doing great. The kids are with her, which is all she wants. She's as strong as ever.'

Oscar winner Ben has been flying back and forth to help take care of their children while his estranged wife is on set.

The source added: '[He] plans to be there with them as much as he can. He's playing Mr. Mom, and that is what he wants to do. As difficult as it is, from what we've seen, it's pretty amicable.'

Meanwhile, along with joking about heartbreak, Ben could not resist making a jovial dig at five-time World Series champion Jeter before singing his praises.

After making his grand entrance in a dapper two-piece suit, the California-born actor said: 'Hi, I'm Ben Affleck, I'm from Boston. If you're from Boston you always wanted to hate our next honoree.

'There was something about him that made the boos ring a little hollow.'

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice star then went on a full-scale charm offensive.

He gushed: 'Maybe it was his inimitable class, maybe it was that he won with dignity and lost with grace, maybe it was simply that we knew, no matter what, he was a winner regardless.

'Boston sports fans can be many things, but we know baseball and we respect those who play the game the way it was meant to be played.

As if that was not enough, he then thanked Jeter for playing the game, even though he had won more World Series during his career than the Red Sox have during Ben's entire lifetime.

Derek, 41, was delighted to have been showered with praise, and even delivered a crack of his own.

He quipped: 'I told Ben I know it pained him to say every one of those words.'
