'I shan't be walking that runway again!' Lena Dunham admits performing alongside Taylor Swift and her svelte supermodel friends made her feel 'chubby' and 'short'

  • Lena dished about the experience during a conversation with Girls producer Judd Apatow hosted by the Film Society of Lincoln Center

Lena Dunham has proven time and time again that she is proud of her body - however, even the most confident woman in the world would prefer not to be seen on Jumbotron standing alongside Taylor Swift and her supermodel friends.

The 29-year-old Girls creator and star sat down with the HBO show's producer Judd Apatow on Monday for a conversation hosted by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, in which she discussed feeling short and 'chubby' as she performed alongside Lily Aldridge, Gigi Hadid and Hailee Steinfeld over the weekend at Taylor's 1989 tour concert at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

'I was so thrilled to support my friend and so displeased to learn about the truth of my own height,' Lena said of the moment. 'I've been feeling pretty tall, feeling pretty sturdy, and it was amazing to me, like: "Oh, I'm not tall. I'm chubby."'

She explained: 'I mean, on most days, I feel really great and fine about my body, but I don't think standing next to, like, three supermodels or so is anything even the most confident woman needs to do.

'And when I socialize with those women, which I've done a little bit, because they're good friends of Taylor's, who is a good friend of mine, I don't feel so strange.

'But the minute I caught sight of myself in the Jumbotron, I knew something was very wrong.'

Lena, Lily, Gigi, and Hailee all appeared in Taylor's star-studded music video for her her song Bad Blood, and while the bestselling author said she had a great time re-acting their performance on Friday, she noted of her strut down the stage: 'I shan't be walking that runway again.'

Go retro like Lena in a demure denim dress

Lena Dunhams is definitely part of the cool-girl club in New York City this week. First, she was on hand at Taylor Swift's concert in N.J. along with the super-cool gang Gigi Hadid, Hailee Steinfeld, and Lily Aldridge.

Today, she was cutting a swath all her own, spotted shopping in Brooklyn wearing this super-cute Alexa Chung for AG Jeans denim shirt dress.

We love the Little House on the Prairie feel--very '70s-- with bell sleeves, pintucks at the neckline and a tie-neck. She paired the dress with a crossbody bag and a pair of platforms. If you've just gotta have this exact piece, click right to buy at Farfetch.

The actress also admitted that her appearance on stage incited some unsolicited reactions from her friends and longtime boyfriend Jack Antonoff.

'I got all these texts from friends saying like, "I just want you to know you're beautiful," and I was like, "I didn't ask for that,"' she explained. 'You [Judd] were just like, "That was the f***ing funniest thing I've ever seen."

'And my boyfriend made it his screensaver, because he thinks it's so funny to just look at the height difference and look at all the people in makeup, and then me, like [makes face].'

Judd went on to remind Lena that Taylor and crew don't look like average women, explaining: 'I feel like there's people, and people look like normal people, and then there's, like, Chris Hemsworth and Brad Pitt people, and we can't really compare ourselves to them, because they are aliens.'

The producer, whose 16-year-old daughter Maude appeared in Girls last season, told Refinery29 that he thinks it is wonderful that his eldest child spends time with inspiring women such as Lena and comedian Amy Schumer.

'Maude has been lucky enough to get to know Amy and Lena Dunham, and I think it has inspired her in the best possible way,' he said.

Judd added: 'She has gotten to see these amazing, creative, hard working women at work and outside of work, and I hope it makes her see that anything is possible if you are that dedicated and kind.'

Meanwhile, Lena has already moved on from her minor bout of insecurity and is busy promoting the September launch of Lenny, the newsletter for young women that she and her production partner Jenni Konner have created.

'We want people who have totally diverse interests,' Lena told Buzzfeed of the women who will be writing for the newsletter.

'People who want to talk about radical politics but also want to talk about fashion and also want to talk about Rihanna, and also understand that all of those things can be happening at the same time.'
