The 63-year-old has revealed he will star in the new Ghostbusters reboot.

The actor confirmed what most people expected and everybody hoped when he tweeted from the Boston set on Tuesday.

'On GB set shooting my scene with funny beautiful Kristen Wiig Lady GB's are adorable, hilarious and badass Exhilarating! #ghostbusters'.

But shortly afterward the tweet mysteriously disappeared from his feed, which can only point to the paranormal... or he got in trouble for revealing what would have been one of the film's best gags.

Aykroyd famously played the spook-scrapping Ray Stantz in the classic 1984 original film and its 1989 sequel, alongside Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson.

A third film was mooted for years but got stuck in developmental hell, until Ramis suddenly died in February last year, which appeared to finally put the idea to rest.

But six months later it emerged that Paul Feig was directing a reboot, recasting the four leads as females, starring SNL alumni Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, as well as switching the female receptionist to a very male Chris Hemsworth.

But as the plot required the public to be unaware of the existence of ghosts, the original stars cannot return in the same roles - restricting them to cameo appearances.

According to Indie Revolver, Aykrod's plays a cab driver who Wiig's character tries and fails to hail down, and during the exchange he gets to utter the immortal line 'I ain't afraid of no ghosts'.

A flustered Wiig shouts after him: 'That’s a double negative! That means you ARE afraid of ghosts!'

Both Murray and Hudson has previously stated they would also consider doing a cameo for the film, which is scheduled for release in July 2016.
