Obese woman who was addicted to pub food drops THIRTEEN STONE after breaking a hotel bed... and she inspired her partner to lose weight too

  • Nannette Young, 39, broke a hotel bed in Greece twice when she was 24st
  • The incident made her determined to lose the weight she'd piled on
  • Her partner Melanie Ramsdale, 30, joined her girlfriend in her diet
  • The pair, from Worcestershire, lost a combined weight of 19st in two years

A woman who ballooned to 24 stone on a diet of beer and takeaways was shamed into losing more than half her body weight after breaking a bed.

Nannette Young, 39, from Kidderminster, Worcestershire, was a size 32 when she caused the double to collapse beneath her while holidaying in Greece.

The pub manager immediately overhauled her diet and lifestyle, inspiring her 15st partner Mel Ramsdale, 30, to do the same.

The couple cut out all fast food after returning from their Greek holiday in 2013, transforming their bodies - Nanette dropped to 11st 5lbs and a size 12, while Mel is now 9st and a size eight.

Before that, fearful of snapping other people's furniture, Nanette had resorted to carrying around her own fold-up chair to parties and gatherings.

She said: 'It was the most embarrassing moment of my life when the bed broke, I just couldn't believe it.

'I went to sit down and the frame just went, then after that I lay down and another part broke too.

'The hotel staff were really nice about it but I was mortified and tried to hide.'

However, Nannette was aware that her weight was becoming an increasing inconvenience.

'My weight was a real issue back then and held me back a lot, even at family parties I'd feel cautious about sitting on other's people's garden furniture.

'I avoided plastic chairs worrying that I wouldn't be able to fit or worse that I'd end up being stuck.

'If I ever saw a wooden seat I would feel anxious and couldn't sit on it just in case it broke.

'I started bringing my own chair with me just so that I could avoid that problem.

'Even when I was in the airplane seats it was so tight that I couldn't open the tray-table in front of me.

'At that point I knew I needed to lose weight and with the help of Slimming World I've been able to achieve that dream.'

Weatherspoon's manager, Nannette, noticed her weight spiralling out of control after years of eating pub grub and takeaways, and drinking up to four pints of beer a night.

But in September 2013 enough was enough for Nannette and her partner Mel and they decided to lose weight together.

The pair started walking their dog Teddy and cooking healthier meals, a huge departure from their previous diet when they would devour a pack of ribs meant for a family of four.

Between them they have lost a staggering 19st, after Nannette dropped 13st and Mel shed another six.

The couple, who have been together for 13 years, were also shortlisted for Slimming World's Couple of the Year 2015.

Nannette said: 'We turned our weight loss into a bit of a competition and were overwhelmed by each other's success.

'When the pounds started to drop off it was so rewarding for us, we feel so much more adventurous and have so much more energy.

'I can barely recognise myself when I catch my reflection in the mirror, I often end up having to double-take as I look so much better now.'

Nannette says that she and her partner have been enjoying the benefits of their healthier new lifestyle.

'Before I'd never be able to find anything that would suit me when I went shopping but now I can be much more daring with my clothing.

'When I lost ten stone we celebrated by hiking Mount Snowdon, which was incredible.'

Partner Mel, who now works at an outdoor activity centre, also found slimming success, shrinking from a size 18 to a size eight.

She reached 15st after sustaining a long-term knee injury, while playing for Birmingham City Football club.

Mel said: 'Before I could barely walk 100 yards without being out of breath and now I'm going to run a marathon.

'Me and Mel are a much more active couple now that we go hiking, zip-lining and loads of fun activities we never would have been able to do before.'

The couple's Slimming World consultant, Claire Weir said: 'Having Nannette and Mel in our Slimming World team has been amazing - the way they motivate and inspire one another as well as others in the group has been amazing.

'Their enthusiasm rubs off on everyone and their weight loss makes everyone believe that they too can be successful.

'This hasn't been a quick fix for them, it's been a total change of lifestyle, from shopping, cooking, eating and physical activity - everything has changed in order for them to be where they are today and I have no doubt that this will be for life now.

'I cannot put into words how proud I am of all they've achieved and the changes they have made.'
