She reminisced about the story during a live on-stage Q&A with director and producer Judd Apatow at New York City's Lincoln Center on Monday.

According to US Weekly, the awkward interaction began when 69-year-old Keaton asked if Lena was Judd's wife, he replied:  'No, this is my friend Lena, and she's significantly younger than me.'

The 47-year-old Trainwreck director has been married to actress Leslie Mann for nearly 20 years.

'"Do you even like men? Are you interested in men?,"' Lena recalled Keaton's queries. 'It was the best thing.'

Lena is currently in a three-year relationship with Fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff.

She elaborated more on her awkward interaction with the Annie Hall actress: 'Diane Keaton straight-up was just like "Oh, there's a lesbian, and I'm Diane Keaton, so I don't even need to beat around the proverbial bush. I'll just let her know."'

Judd then joked: 'That may be more about Diane Keaton's judgment of me and my ability to bring a woman.'

Lena serves as creator, producer, writer and actress on her HBO series Girls, which Judd serves as executive producer.

Having fun: She had a good sense of humour about the interaction as she said: 'Diane Keaton straight-up was just like "Oh, there's a lesbian, and I'm Diane Keaton, so I don't even need to beat around the proverbial bush. I'll just let her know"'

Go retro like Lena in a demure denim dress

Lena Dunhams is definitely part of the cool-girl club in New York City this week. First, she was on hand at Taylor Swift's concert in N.J. along with the super-cool gang Gigi Hadid, Hailee Steinfeld, and Lily Aldridge.

Today, she was cutting a swath all her own, spotted shopping in Brooklyn wearing this super-cute Alexa Chung for AG Jeans denim shirt dress.

We love the Little House on the Prairie feel--very '70s-- with bell sleeves, pintucks at the neckline and a tie-neck. She paired the dress with a crossbody bag and a pair of platforms. If you've just gotta have this exact piece, click right to buy at Farfetch.

Meanwhile, Lena recently surprised her fans as she made the decision to not marry her longtime boyfriend, Jack, after same-sex couples won the right to marry nationwide by the US Supreme Court.

She explained her complicated thought process about postponing her nuptial ceremony in an essay penned for The New Yorker which was released on Friday.

Lena was one of the most outspoken activists in support of legalizing same-sex marriage in the States, even going as far as boycotting marriage until every human was given the right.

'I liked that our anti-marriage plan wasn't absolute, and that it teased at a brighter future for all (a future where I might get to wear the fluffy white dress),' she wrote about her wedding fever.

'Soon after, another kind of text started to trickle in: "Now you can get married!" "Hello, bride to be" "So, when's the wedding??"' the actress fondly remembered after the Court decision.

Her joy was overshadowed with thoughts of second guessing her stance on wedlock, as she explained: 'We were exposed, vulnerable to marriage's strange power once more.

'Had a perfectly earnest moral and political stance actually been a convenient stalling tactic?'

As Lena recollected, Jack felt no immediacy, 'because, as a man, his entire life has not been shaped by a desire for, or a rejection of, a fluffy white dress.'

In fact, she was the first one to bring up the idea of deferring their future nuptials.

'I held Jack's hand and said, "Let's not talk about marriage for a while, O.K.?" He looked grateful and relieved. I felt unburdened but sad. The subject wasn't particularly loaded for him. It never would be.'
